The Slingsbys

Slingsbys at War

Since I was a child I have always paused at War Memorials and searched the list of fallen to see if there was a Slingsby amongst them. I have never found one. Imagine my surprise when I searched the Commonwealth War Graves Commission website and found 48 names from two world wars. I suppose my interest stems from the fact that my Dad served in WW2 and my Grandparents served in WW1. Luckily for me my Dad spent a good part of the war in Iceland away from the worst of the conflict. I spent my teenage years in a town in Lyme Bay, Devon with many hours spent sailing and fishing in the bay. Imagine my surprise to learn that everytime I gazed out to sea I was looking on the watery grave of my namesake, John Slingsby who at the age of 16 and as a Midshipman died on HMS Formidable when it was torpedoed by U24 on Friday 1 January 1915. He was the son of Rev C Slingsby and Mrs Slingsby of Scriven Park, Knaresborough, Yorkshire. He is commemorated on the Chatham Naval Memorial in Kent.

If you have any information about any of the 48 listed as war dead or have stories about surviving Slingsby soldiers, sailors or airmen please let us know
